Tommy Rees Reunites with Kevin Stefanski in Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons have hired Tommy Rees as their new offensive coordinator, bringing him back together with head coach Kevin Stefanski. This move reunites the two coaches after they both parted ways with the Cleveland Browns, where Rees served as offensive coordinator last season.
Rees, who spent two seasons with the Browns, was promoted to offensive coordinator last year after a successful run as an assistant coach at Notre Dame and Alabama. However, after a challenging season for the Browns, Stefanski was let go as head coach earlier this month, leaving Rees without a job as well.
Just last week, Stefanski was hired as the Falcons’ new head coach, replacing Raheem Morris, who was fired after three seasons in Atlanta. With that decision in place, Rees was quickly seen as the frontrunner for the offensive coordinator role, a position he has now officially taken up.
The Browns’ Struggles and the Falcons’ Potential
While Stefanski’s tenure with the Browns had its challenges, including a lack of consistency at quarterback, he did manage to win two Coach of the Year awards. The Browns finished with a disappointing 8-9 record over the last two seasons, plagued by inconsistent quarterback play. After Baker Mayfield’s departure, the team cycled through quarterbacks like Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, without finding a lasting solution.
However, the situation in Atlanta offers a different outlook. While the Falcons also have quarterback questions to resolve, with Michael Penix Jr. recovering from an ACL injury and Kirk Cousins’ future uncertain, the team managed to finish tied atop the NFC South with an 8-9 record last season. The stability and potential for growth in Atlanta may provide a fresh start for both Stefanski and Rees.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season
The duo’s reunion in Atlanta comes at a critical time for the Falcons. With a solid foundation already in place, Stefanski and Rees are poised to rebuild the offense and solidify the team’s standing in the NFC South. Their combined experience and familiarity with each other could help the Falcons tackle their quarterback situation and push for a more successful season ahead.
